Sandburg Residence Hall is a large student housing building at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. It is located on Maryland Avenue in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This building is the biggest student residence on campus. It can house about 2,700 students.
Sandburg Residence Hall is made up of four tall towers. The North and West towers were built in 1971. The South tower was finished in 1973. The East tower is the newest, completed in 2001. All four towers are connected by a two-floor area called Sandburg Commons. This area has shared spaces for students. The university's housing offices and police department are also located here.
The tallest part of Sandburg Halls is the North tower. It stands about 242 feet (74 meters) tall. If you include the antenna on its roof, it reaches up to 481 feet (146.8 meters).
Sandburg Halls is named after Carl Sandburg. He was a famous American writer and poet. There is a special sign outside the building that tells more about him. It explains that he worked to help organize the Social Democratic Party. He also served as a personal secretary to Emil Seidel, who was Milwaukee's first Socialist mayor.
The Towers of Sandburg Hall
Sandburg Hall has four main towers, each with different features.
North, South, and West Towers
The North, South, and West towers are very similar inside. They have the same types of student suites and room layouts. The main difference between them is their height. The North tower has 26 floors, the South tower has 20 floors, and the West tower has 16 floors. Each floor in these three towers has eight student suites.
East Tower
The East tower is different from the others. It is 17 stories tall. Each floor in the East tower has six apartment-style suites. These suites offer a different living experience for students.
