The Story of Sandeman
The Sandeman company was started by two brothers, George and David Sandeman, from Perth, Scotland. They began their business in 1790 with just £300. David left the company in 1798 to help start a bank. This left George in charge of the wine business.
Over the years, Sandeman grew. In 1953, the company bought another port wine business called Robertson Brothers.
The Sandeman business stayed in the family for a long time. George Sandeman's nephew, George Glas Sandeman, took over after him. The family owned the company until 1979. That's when a big drinks company called Seagram bought it.
Later, in 2001, the Sandeman operation was sold again. This time, it was bought by Sogrape, a Portuguese wine company. Today, a descendant of the original founder, George Thomas David Sandeman, is part of the board at Sogrape Vinhos S.A.
The Sandeman Family History
The founder, George Sandeman, came from a family with interesting history. His father was also named George. The family line goes back to David Sandeman and Margret Ramsey, who married in 1716. Their children included a famous religious thinker, Robert Sandeman, and a linen maker named William Sandeman.
The Sandeman family owned the wine business until 1993. In the 1800s, some family members moved to Hayling Island in England. They lived at Westfield House and have a family grave there. A family member, Fleetwood Sandeman, even started the Hayling Golf Club in 1883.
Lea & Sandeman Wine Merchants
In 1993, a new wine business called Lea & Sandeman was formed. It was started by Patrick Sandeman and Charles Lea. Patrick was a member of the Sandeman family who had worked for Seagram. Sadly, Patrick passed away in 2012. His wife, Katie, then became a director of the company.
