Sandy is a small place in Manatee County, Florida, United States. It is an unincorporated area, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. In the past, this community was known by other names, like Sandy Branch and Stephen.

What is Sandy, Florida?

Sandy is a small farming community. It is located in the Myakka area. You can find it south of another small community called Edgeville.

Early Days of Sandy

The first records of Sandy go back to 1883. That year, a post office was opened there. A person named Thomas A. Stephens was the first postmaster. At that time, the community was called Stephen. This name likely came from the Stephens family who lived there.

The post office did not stay open for long. It closed and moved to a place called Pine Level just a few years later.

How Sandy Got Its Name

After the post office closed, old newspapers show the community was called Sandy Branch. But by the late 1890s, most people just called it Sandy.

In 1889, the post office opened again in Sandy. Thomas A. Stephens became the postmaster once more. He also opened the very first general store in Sandy that same year.

Sandy's Growth and Changes

By the year 1900, Sandy had grown quite a bit. There were 164 people living there. The community was big enough to have its own special section in the local newspaper, the Manatee River Journal. This section shared news about the people and events in Sandy.

In 1913, a new building was built for the Sandy School. This was an important step for the children in the area. However, in the same year, the post office closed down again.
