Sandra "Sandy" Maria Cane (born July 28, 1961) is an Italian politician. She was the mayor of Viggiù, a town in Italy. She was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in the United States.
Sandra Cane's father is African American, and her mother is Italian. Her mother was from Viggiù. When Sandra was 10 years old, her parents separated. She then moved to Viggiù, her mother's hometown.
Early Life and Career
Sandra Cane studied foreign languages in school. After finishing her studies, she began working in the tourism industry. She became the director of a hotel.
She also learned the local language spoken in Viggiù very well. This language is a special kind of Western Lombard dialect, sometimes called dialetto bosino.
Becoming a Mayor
In June 2009, Sandra Cane decided to run for mayor of Viggiù. She was the candidate for a political group called Lega Nord. People in Viggiù voted for her in the elections.
She won about 30% of the votes. This made her the first female mayor in Italy who was not white. This was a big moment in Italian politics.
In an interview with a newspaper called The Independent, Sandra Cane shared her views. She said that she supported Barack Obama, who was the President of the United States at that time.
