The Camissonia strigulosa, also known as the sandysoil suncup, is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the evening primrose family. This plant gets its common name, "sandysoil suncup," because it often grows in sandy places and its flowers look a bit like small cups.

You can find this plant growing naturally in California and Baja California. It loves sandy spots! This includes beaches, sandy areas along mountains, and even parts of the Mojave Desert.

Discovering the Sandysoil Suncup

The sandysoil suncup is an annual herb. This means it grows from a seed, flowers, produces new seeds, and then dies all within one year. It has a strong, thin, and hairy stem. This stem can either stand straight up or spread out along the sand. It can grow up to about 50 centimeters long.

What Does the Plant Look Like?

The stem is covered with small, thin leaves. These leaves are usually green but can sometimes be reddish. They have tiny, bumpy edges, almost like little teeth.

The Suncup's Flowers

The flowers of the sandysoil suncup are small and pretty. Each flower has four yellow petals. These petals are only a few millimeters long. Sometimes, you might see small red spots near the bottom of the petals.

Fruit and Seeds

After the flower blooms, it produces a fruit. This fruit is a very long and thin pod-like capsule. Inside this capsule are tiny seeds, ready to grow into new plants next year.
