The Sandö Bridge (called Sandöbron in Swedish) is a large concrete arch bridge. It crosses the Ångerman River in the northern part of Sweden, near a town called Kramfors Municipality. This bridge is quite impressive!

What Makes the Sandö Bridge Special?

The Sandö Bridge is known for its long main span. This is the part of the bridge that stretches over the river without any support pillars in the water. Its free span is 264 meters long. That's like two and a half football fields! The bridge also stands 42 meters above the water. This allows tall ships to pass underneath easily.

A Challenging Construction

Building such a big bridge was a huge task. Construction started in the late 1930s. Sadly, during the building process, a terrible accident happened. On August 31, 1939, a part of the bridge collapsed. This tragic event led to the death of 18 construction workers. It was a very difficult time for everyone involved.

Despite this setback, the builders continued their hard work. They learned from the accident and worked carefully to finish the bridge.

When Was the Sandö Bridge Completed?

After the collapse and a lot of effort, the Sandö Bridge was finally completed. It opened to traffic in 1943. Since then, it has been an important link for travel and trade in the region. It stands as a strong symbol of engineering and perseverance.
