History of Kramfors Municipality
The area that is now Kramfors Municipality has a long history. In 1947, a rural area called Gudmundrå became one of the last places in Sweden to be given the status of a city. It was then named Kramfors, after a nearby industrial area.
How Kramfors Grew
In 1952, many smaller towns and villages around Kramfors joined together to form larger municipalities. This was part of a big change across Sweden. By 1971, Kramfors became a single, unified municipality. The process of combining all these areas was fully finished in 1974. Today, the municipality includes what were originally eleven different local units, including the town of Bjärtrå.
Exploring Kramfors: Famous Landmarks
Kramfors Municipality is home to some impressive structures and important historical sites. These places tell stories about the area's past and its natural beauty.
The Sandö Bridge
One of the most famous landmarks is the Sandö Bridge. This bridge crosses the Ångerman River. It is made of concrete and has one very long span, meaning it crosses the river without any supports in the middle. When it opened in 1943, its 264-meter length made it the longest bridge of its kind in the world. It held this record until 1964.
Ådalen Shootings Monument
Near the Sandö Bridge, you can find a monument that remembers a sad event from 1931. This monument honors the people who lost their lives during the Ådalen shootings. During a demonstration, five people were killed. The monument stands as a reminder of this important moment in Swedish history.
Nature and World Heritage
Kramfors Municipality is also famous for its stunning natural landscapes, especially along its eastern coast.
The High Coast World Heritage Site
A large part of the UNESCO World Heritage Area known as Höga kusten, or "High Coast" in English, is located on the eastern side of Kramfors municipality. This area is special because it shows how the land has risen from the sea after the last Ice Age. It has unique cliffs, islands, and bays that are truly amazing to see. The High Coast is a popular spot for hiking, boating, and enjoying nature.
