History of Kramfors
Kramfors grew a lot in the 1800s. It was built on the western side of the Ångerman river. Logs were floated down the river. These logs were then cut into wood at sawmills. They were also used to make paper at pulp mills.
Christopher Kramm started the first steam-powered sawmill. He named it after himself. The town's name, Kramfors, comes from his name. The word fors means "rapid" in Swedish.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the timber industry became less important. Because of this, the number of people living in Kramfors went down.
Early Development of Kramfors
The first settlement of Kramfors was part of Gudmundrå municipality. In 1889, it became a special type of area called a municipalsamhälle. This is like a small town with its own rules. But it was still part of the original municipality.
In 1947, Kramfors was given city status. It was one of the last places in Sweden to become a city. Since 1974, after a big change in how municipalities were set up, Kramfors has been the main town for Kramfors Municipality.
