Sanitarium (which used to be called Crystal Springs) is a small, unincorporated community in Napa County, California. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government. Instead, it's managed by the county.

This community sits at an elevation of 587 feet (179 meters) above sea level. It is located about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) north of the town of Saint Helena.

How Sanitarium Began

The community of Sanitarium has an interesting history. It was started in 1878 by a religious group called the Seventh-day Adventists. They wanted to create a special place focused on health and wellness.

A Place for Health

The Seventh-day Adventists opened a type of health center called a sanitarium. They named it the Rural Health Retreat at Crystal Springs. A sanitarium is a place where people go to get better from illnesses or to improve their health through special diets, exercise, and rest.

Over time, the name of this health center changed. It became known as St. Helena Sanitarium. Today, it is called St. Helena Hospital. As the health center grew, a community formed around it. This community then took on the name "Sanitarium."

The Post Office Story

For many years, the community of Sanitarium had its own post office. This post office operated from 1901 until 1970. In 1970, the post office was moved and given a new name. It was renamed the Deer Park post office.
