Discovering Ancient Life
Sant Julià de Vilatorta is home to some amazing places where scientists find very old fossils. These sites help us learn about life on Earth millions of years ago.
Cánoves: A Fossil Hotspot
One important site is called Cánoves. This area is known for fossils from the Eocene epoch. The Eocene was a time period that lasted from about 56 to 33.9 million years ago.
At Cánoves, a new type of echinoid (a sea creature related to starfish) was found. This new species was named Calzadaster Friasi. It was first described by scientists in 2004.
Rare Finds of Calzadaster Friasi
Finding a new species is very exciting! For Calzadaster Friasi, scientists have only found a few examples:
- The holotype (the main example used to describe the species) is kept safe. You can see it at the Geological Museum of the Barcelona Seminary.
- Two paratypes (other examples that help define the species) are in a private collection. They are located in the village of Amer.
These rare fossils tell us about the ancient oceans and the creatures that lived in them a very long time ago.
Local Government
Like all municipalities, Sant Julià de Vilatorta has a local government. This government helps manage the town and its services. The head of the local government is called the Mayor.
