The Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History (MAH) is a special place in Santa Cruz, California. It is a non-profit museum that opened in 1996. The museum's main goal is to bring people together. It uses art and history to help build a stronger, more connected community. You can find the MAH in downtown Santa Cruz at the McPherson Center.

Exploring the Museum

The MAH has two main collections: art and history. The art collection continues the work of the Santa Cruz County Museum of Art, which started in 1982. The history collection comes from the Santa Cruz Historical Society, founded in 1954.

What You Can See

The history part of the museum has a special gallery. This gallery shows the history of the local Monterey Bay Area. There is also a research library and an archive. The history collection has more than 7,000 items. You can even look at guides to these collections online.

Sharing History Through Books

The museum also helps publish books about history. This part of the museum was started by the Fred D. McPherson Jr. Publications Fund. They have published many local history books. They also create the Santa Cruz County History Journal. As of January 2016, there were eight issues of this journal. There is also an Online History Journal.

Other Places the MAH Manages

The museum also takes care of other important community spots. These include the Abbott Square community plaza. They also manage three historical sites. These are Evergreen Cemetery, the Davenport Jail, and the Octagon Building. Many of the museum's programs are created with and for people in Santa Cruz County.

Museum Leaders

The museum has a leader called an executive director. This person helps guide the museum's work.

  • Rob Woulfe became the executive director in February 2020. He is still in this role today.
  • Before him, Nina Simon was the director from 2012 until June 2019.
  • Charles "Chuck" Noel Hilger was the first director. He served from 1996 to 2003.
