Santa Eugènia is a small town in Majorca, one of the Balearic Islands in Spain. It is located in the Pla de Mallorca region. A municipality is like a local government area, similar to a small county or district. This town is named after Saint Eugenia of Rome.
A Look Back in Time
Early Settlers
Long, long ago, even before recorded history, people lived in the area where Santa Eugènia is now. These early inhabitants were part of the Talaiotic Culture. They built large stone structures, some of which you can still see today on the islands.
Moorish Rule and Reconquest
Later, the area was taken over by the Moors. These were people from North Africa who ruled parts of Spain for many centuries. Specifically, the Berber Zenata people governed this region.
In 1229, a very important event happened. King James I of Aragon captured the area. This was part of a bigger effort to take back lands from Moorish rule. This event changed the history of Santa Eugènia forever.
