Santa Lucía is a small town and a municipality in Nicaragua. It is located in the Boaco Department. About 10,300 people lived there in 2006. The municipality covers an area of 120.78 square kilometers.

The main town of Santa Lucía is about 94 kilometers from Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua. Most of the people, about 72%, live in the countryside. The other 28% live in the town itself.

The economy of Santa Lucía mostly depends on farming. There are around 2,200 small farmers in the area. They grow crops and also raise animals.

The mayor of Santa Lucía is Elba Maria Salinas Guzmán. She is a leader from the Constitutional Liberal Party (PLC).

A Look at Santa Lucía's History

Long ago, when Spain ruled the area, Santa Lucía was known by a different name. It was called Potreritos, which means "small pasturelands" in English. At that time, it was part of the Teustepe municipality.

Later, the town was renamed to honor Saint Lucy. On August 16, 1904, Santa Lucía officially became its own municipality. It also became part of the Boaco Department.

Fun Local Festivities

Santa Lucía celebrates its main local festival from December 10 to 17. These celebrations honor Saint Lucy, the town's patron saint.

The festivities continue on February 12 and 13. During these times, the people of Santa Lucía enjoy many activities. These include corridas (bull runs), popular fiestas (parties), and special religious events.
