Teustepe is a special place in Nicaragua, located in the Boaco Department. It's a type of local government area called a municipality. In 2005, about 26,265 people lived in the whole municipality. The main town, also called Teustepe, is home to about 3,953 people and is about 94 kilometers (58 miles) from Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua.

Most people in Teustepe work in farming. They raise a lot of animals, especially cattle, and grow crops. There are also some small, family-run businesses that make things by hand, like crafts. You can also find some warm, natural springs called Aguas Termales (which means "thermal waters") that are starting to attract visitors.

The local government of Teustepe is led by a mayor and a vice-mayor. As of 2025, Paulina Ramos is the mayor and Willfredo Díaz is the vice-mayor. They both belong to a political group called the FSLN.

A Look at Teustepe's Past

How Teustepe Got Its Name

The name Teustepe comes from an old native language called Chorotega. It combines two words: Teote, which means "God," and Tepec, which means "Place" or "Town." So, Teustepe means "Town, Valley, or Place of God."

Moving to a New Home

The first people who lived in Teustepe originally settled in an area called El Tamarindo. However, the nearby Malacatoya River often flooded, making it difficult to live there. Because of these floods, the community decided to move. Between September and December of 1776, they relocated to a new spot. This new place was once known as Camoapilla, and it's where the town of Teustepe stands today.

Standing Strong in History

Teustepe played an important role in history, especially during a war against an adventurer named William Walker. Walker was a "filibuster," which means he was a person who led unauthorized military expeditions into other countries. Teustepe showed great strength and resistance during this conflict.

To help protect the area, a special "Military District of Teustepe" was created in April 1861. This was thanks to the idea of General Tomás Martínez. This district helped oversee and protect several nearby towns, including Boaco, San Lorenzo, and San José de los Remates.

Becoming a City

Many years later, on February 28, 1970, Teustepe was officially recognized as a city by law. This was an important moment for the community.

Fun Local Celebrations

The people of Teustepe love to celebrate! They have two main annual festivities:

Santa Rita de Casia Festivities

Every year, from May 18th to May 23rd, the town celebrates in honor of Santa Rita de Casia. These days are filled with special events and traditions.

Virgin of Candelaria Celebration

Another important celebration takes place on February 2nd. This day honors the Virgin of Candelaria with its own unique festivities.
