History of Santiago
Founding of the Mission
The area where Santiago is located has a rich history. A mission was founded here in 1724. It was called the Misión Santiago de Los Coras. This mission was started by a Jesuit missionary named Ignacio Maria Napoli. Jesuits are members of a Catholic religious order.
The Mission's End and New Church
The Misión Santiago de Los Coras operated for many years. It eventually closed in 1795. After the mission closed, a new church was built nearby. This church is known as the Church of Santiago Apostol. It continues to be an important part of the community.
