Santo Domingo Oeste is a large city area, also called a municipality, located in the Santo Domingo province of the Dominican Republic. It is part of the bigger Santo Domingo city area. This area is very important because it acts like a co-capital for the Dominican Republic. It is where important government groups, like the Constitutional Court and the Central Electoral Commission, have their main offices.
About Santo Domingo Oeste
Santo Domingo Oeste became its own municipality in 2001. This happened because of a special law, Law 163-01. This law separated parts of the Santo Domingo province from the Distrito Nacional. It included areas of the big city of Santo Domingo that are west of the main highway, called the DR-1 or Autopista Duarte.
