Sapphire is a beautiful color that reminds us of the deep blue sapphire gemstone. These amazing gems are most often found in many different shades of blue. You might also hear this color called blue sapphire or sapphire blue.

The word sapphire was first used to describe a color in the English language way back in 1430.

What is Sapphire Color?

Sapphire is a rich, deep blue color. It gets its name from the precious gemstone called a sapphire. Just like the gemstone, the color can range from a light, bright blue to a very dark, almost navy blue. It's a color often linked with royalty, wisdom, and calm feelings.

The Sapphire Gemstone

The sapphire gemstone is a type of mineral called corundum. While sapphires are famous for their blue color, they can actually come in almost any color of the rainbow, except red. Red corundum is called a ruby! The blue color in sapphires comes from tiny amounts of elements like iron and titanium inside the crystal. These gems are very hard, making them popular for jewelry like rings, necklaces, and earrings.

Different Shades of Sapphire

Just like there are many different blue things in the world, there are many different shades of sapphire blue. Think of the ocean on a sunny day, or the night sky before the stars come out. Each shade has its own special look and feel. Some are brighter, some are darker, and some have a hint of purple or green.
