Sara Fina Gutiérrez Tafoya (1863-1949) was a very important potter from the Tewa people. She lived in Kha'po Owingeh, New Mexico. Sometimes, her name is spelled Serafina Tafoya.

Sara Fina was known for her beautiful black pottery. This pottery often had simple designs. She made blackware and black-on-black ware. Her pots often had a special bear claw mark. Many people say she was the best Tewa potter of her time. Her family has been making pottery for a very long time. Sara Fina mostly made large pots. These pots had curved shapes and carved patterns.

Family Life and Legacy

Sara Fina Tafoya married Geronimo Tafoya. They had eight children together. Many of her children, grandchildren, and other family members became famous potters too. Some of these artists include Margaret Tafoya, LuAnn Tafoya, Tammy Garcia, and Nathan Youngblood. They continued the family tradition of making amazing pottery.

Sara Fina Tafoya's pottery is very special. You can find her work in many art museums. Some places that have her art are the Art Institute of Chicago and the Denver Art Museum.
