Her Early Life and Education
Sarah Calburn grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa. She went to Roedean School and finished high school in 1981. After that, she decided to study architecture. She went to the University of the Witwatersrand and graduated in 1987. Later, in 1996, she earned a special master's degree from Australia's Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. This degree was for her research in architecture.
Building a Career in Architecture
In 1996, Sarah started her own architecture business in Johannesburg. She didn't just work in South Africa! She also worked as an architect in many exciting cities. These include Paris, Hong Kong, Sydney, and Melbourne.
Sarah has designed many homes and buildings. One cool project was the Momo art gallery in Johannesburg. She also helps lead the Gauteng Institute for Architecture. In 2010, she was in charge of ArchitectureZA 2010. This was a big event to help make Johannesburg's city areas better. Sarah has also taught architecture at different universities. She taught at the University of the Witwatersrand, the University of Cape Town, and RMIT Melbourne.
Making a Difference: Awards and Projects
In December 2010, Sarah Calburn won an award in Zurich, Switzerland. She teamed up with another architect, Dustin A. Tusnovics. They won third prize in the Urbaninform Design Contest. Their project was called Taking the Gap. The judges really liked their design. They said it was a very important idea for building affordable homes in South Africa.
