Sarah Cavendish, 1st Baroness Waterpark (born Sarah Bradshaw; August 1, 1740 – August 4, 1807) was an important woman in Irish history. She was known as a "peeress," which means she held a special noble title in her own right. She became the first Baroness Waterpark.

Early Life of Sarah Bradshaw

Sarah Bradshaw was born on August 1, 1740. She was the only daughter of Richard Bradshaw and his wife, Deborah Bradshaw. Her mother, Deborah, was the daughter of William Thompson from Cork, Ireland. Sarah was the only child, which meant she would inherit her family's wealth and property.

Becoming Baroness Waterpark

On June 15, 1792, Sarah was given the title of Baroness Waterpark by King George III. This was a special honor because she received the title in her own name, not just through her husband. This title was part of the Peerage of Ireland, which is a system of noble titles in Ireland.

The title was created to honor her husband, Henry Cavendish. It was set up so that he could continue to serve as a politician in the Irish House of Commons. He represented areas like Lismore and Killybegs. He also held important government jobs, like Vice-Treasurer and Receiver-General of Ireland. For a few years, from 1768 to 1774, he also served in the British House of Commons.

Sarah's Family Life

On August 12, 1757, Sarah Bradshaw married Henry Cavendish. He was a politician and the eldest son of Sir Henry Cavendish, 1st Baronet. Henry Cavendish became the 2nd Cavendish Baronet of Doveridge Hall in 1776.

Sarah and Henry had eight children together. Here are some of them:

  • Catherine Cavendish (1758–1801) married Philippe, Baron de Ville de Maugrémon.
  • Deborah Cavendish (born around 1760) married Sir Richard Musgrave, 1st Baronet, of Tourin, in 1782.
  • Sarah Cavendish (1763–1849) married Arthur Annesley, 1st Earl of Mountnorris. They had children, including Lady Frances Webster.
  • Richard Cavendish, 2nd Baron Waterpark (1765–1830) became a politician. He married Juliana Cooper.
  • George Cavendish (1766–1849) also became a politician. He served as Secretary to the Lords of the Treasury of Ireland. He married Letitia Catherine Caulfeild and later Catherine Smyth.
  • Augustus Cavendish (1768–1832) was a politician who changed his last name to Bradshaw.
  • Anne Cavendish (1774–1863) married James Browne, 2nd Baron Kilmaine.
  • Frederick Cavendish (1777–1856) married Lady Eleanor Gore. After her death, he married Agnes Catherine Macdonnell.

Baroness Waterpark passed away on August 4, 1807. Her eldest son, Richard, inherited her title and became the 2nd Baron Waterpark.
