About Sarah Gavron

Sarah Gavron went to school at Camden School for Girls. She studied English at the University of York, finishing in 1992. Later, she earned a master's degree in film studies from Edinburgh College of Art. She also attended the National Film and Television School.

At the National Film School, Sarah was taught by famous director Stephen Frears. He, along with Mike Leigh and Terence Davies, influenced her filmmaking style. She also looks up to many other female directors. Before going to film school, she worked for the BBC for three years, making documentaries.

Sarah is married to David Katznelson, who is a cinematographer (someone who works with cameras for films). They have two children together. Sarah has said that she wanted to make films to "make a difference." She is dedicated to telling women's stories accurately. She also feels it's important to be a female director because there aren't many in the UK.

Sarah Gavron's Film Career

Sarah Gavron started her career making documentaries. She found this field easier to get into at first. However, she always wanted to tell stories, so she kept returning to making narrative films.

Early Films and Documentaries

Her first film, This Little Life (2003), was a TV drama. It was about a couple and their baby who was born too early. Brick Lane (2007) is another well-known film she directed. It's based on a book by Monica Ali. The movie shows the life of a Bangladeshi immigrant woman living in London.

Village at the End of the World (2012) is a documentary that Sarah filmed in a remote part of Greenland.

Suffragette and its Impact

Her film Suffragette (2015) is set in London in 1912. It tells the story of the Suffragette movement. The film follows three women who have made-up names but represent real historical figures.

Suffragette was the first major feature film to focus on the fight for women's right to vote. The movie highlights important issues about the legal and social standing of women, wives, and mothers in 1912. Sarah believes the women's suffrage movement is a complex story that is still important today. She wanted Suffragette to show important moments from the past that are still relevant now. The film was shown at the 2015 Telluride Film Festival.

Rocks and Recent Work

Her most recent film, Rocks, was first shown at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. It was part of the Platform Prize program there.
