Sarah Victoria Hainsworth is a super smart engineer and scientist from the United Kingdom. She was born in Leeds, England, on October 5, 1967. She is currently a very important leader at the University of Bath, where she helps guide research. Before this, she held big jobs at Aston University and the University of Leicester. She is known for her work in understanding materials and how things break.

Her School Days and Studies

Sarah Hainsworth went to Richmond School when she was younger. After that, she studied at the University of Newcastle. There, she earned two important degrees: a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). A PhD is a very high degree that shows someone is an expert in their field.

Sarah Hainsworth's Amazing Work

Professor Hainsworth became well-known for her special skills in analyzing old bones. She helped study the skeleton of King Richard III. She looked at marks on his bones to figure out what kind of weapons might have caused them. This was like solving a historical mystery using science!

She also worked on making drinking glasses safer. She studied how glasses are designed and made. Her research helped understand why glasses break and how to make them stronger. This is a great example of how engineering can make everyday things better.

Sarah Hainsworth has also researched materials used in cars. She has led important research centers, like the Advanced Microscopy Centre. This center uses powerful microscopes to look at tiny details of materials. She also headed the Materials Technology Integration Centre (MaTIC).

In 2016, she became the head of the Engineering Department at the University of Leicester. She often helps in legal cases by explaining scientific facts as an expert witness. She also strongly encourages young women to choose engineering as a career. She wants more girls to become engineers and scientists.

From 2017, Professor Hainsworth worked at Aston University. She was a Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of their School of Engineering and Applied Science. In December 2021, she joined the University of Bath. There, she became the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research. This means she helps guide all the research projects happening at the university.

Awards and Special Recognitions

Professor Hainsworth has received many awards for her excellent work.

  • In 1995, she won the Tribology Bronze Medal from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Tribology is the study of friction, wear, and lubrication.
  • In 2008, she received the Rosenhain Medal from the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining.
  • The Women's Engineering Society named her one of their Outstanding Technical Women in 2009.
  • In 2015, she got a special award from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. This was for her important contributions to forensic engineering science. Forensic engineering uses engineering skills to investigate failures and accidents.
  • In 2016, she was chosen to be part of the Royal Academy of Engineering. This is a very high honor for engineers in the UK. She also became a Trustee of the Academy in September 2023.
  • In 2019, she was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire). This award was given to her for her great services to engineering and forensic science.
