Sarah Marshall Kernochan, born on December 30, 1947, is an American filmmaker and writer. She is known for making documentaries, directing movies, writing screenplays, and writing novels. Sarah Kernochan has won two Academy Awards, which are very important film awards. She won for her documentary Marjoe in 1973 and for her short documentary Thoth in 2002.

Early Life and Education

Sarah Kernochan was born in New York City. Her mother, Adelaide Chatfield-Taylor, worked as a consultant for UNESCO. Her father, John Marshall Kernochan, was a professor at Columbia Law School.

Her grandfather, Wayne Chatfield-Taylor, held important government jobs. He was an Under Secretary of Commerce and an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. He worked under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Sarah Kernochan went to Rosemary Hall, which is now called Choate Rosemary Hall. She graduated from there in 1965. She then attended Sarah Lawrence College in 1966.

Sarah Kernochan's Career

After college, Sarah Kernochan worked as a ghostwriter for a newspaper called The Village Voice. She did this for about a year. She then became very interested in making documentary films.

Documentary Films

Sarah Kernochan quickly became well-known for her documentary work. She co-directed and co-produced the film Marjoe in 1972. This film was about an evangelist named Marjoe Gortner. Marjoe won an Academy Award for Documentary Feature.

Her second documentary film was Thoth. This film also won an Academy Award in 2002. It won for Best Documentary Short Subject. She has also taught screenwriting at Emerson College.

Screenwriting and Directing

Kernochan's first job as a screenwriter was for the film 9½ Weeks in 1986. She then wrote the script for Dancers in 1987. This movie starred the famous ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov. It showed the behind-the-scenes life of a ballet company.

She became known in Hollywood for her unique writing style. She wanted female characters to be very real and have many different sides to them. She believed women in films should be as complex as male characters.

She has written scripts for many other films. These include Impromptu in 1991, which was directed by her husband James Lapine. She also wrote for Sommersby in 1993.

In 1998, she wrote and directed the film All I Wanna Do. She also helped write the story for What Lies Beneath in 2000. Her film Learning to Drive was released in 2015. It starred Ben Kingsley and Patricia Clarkson.

Novels

In 1977, Sarah Kernochan published her novel called Dry Hustle. It was later released as an ebook in 2011.

In June 2011, she released another novel titled Jane Was Here. This book is about a mysterious young woman named Jane. Jane arrives in a small town and remembers a past life she has never lived. She tries to put together the pieces of her former life.

Music Career

Sarah Kernochan is also a talented singer, lyricist, and composer. After her film Marjoe was released, she put out two music albums. These albums were called House of Pain and Beat Around the Bush. She sang on these albums and also played the piano.

In 2013, Kernochan released her third album, Decades of Demos. She also wrote a musical called Sleeparound Town. This show was about puberty and featured five young people.

Personal Life

Sarah Kernochan is married to James Lapine. He is an American stage director. James Lapine has won a Pulitzer Prize and three Tony Awards for his work. Their daughter, Phoebe Lapine, is a writer who focuses on food and health.
