Sarcophagus of Adelphia facts for kids
The Sarcophagus of Adelphia is an ancient stone coffin from the early days of Christianity, around the year 340 AD. It's now kept in the Museo Archeologico Regionale Paolo Orsi in Syracuse, Italy. This special coffin was discovered in a round room called the Rotunda of Adelphia, inside the Catacombs of San Giovanni in Syracuse. It has many pictures carved into it that tell stories from the Bible.

What is the Sarcophagus of Adelphia?
The sarcophagus is named after a Roman noblewoman, Adelphia, who is believed to have been buried in it. In the middle of the lid, there's a special plaque with an inscription that says:
Here lies Adelphia, famous woman, wife of Count Valerius.
This tells us who the sarcophagus was made for. The front of the marble coffin has two main sections, one above the other. This was a common style for sarcophagi at that time. Both sections show scenes from the Old Testament and the New Testament. In the very center, there's a shell-shaped circle with carved portraits of Adelphia and her husband, embracing each other. The lid of the sarcophagus also has carvings, making it like a third section of pictures.
Bible Stories on the Sarcophagus
The pictures carved on the sarcophagus are in a style called high bas relief, which means they stick out quite a bit from the surface. Interestingly, some important figures like Moses and Jesus are shown without beards, while Abraham is shown with one. The scenes don't follow a perfect timeline, and sometimes it can be a little hard to tell where one scene ends and another begins.
Scenes on the Lid
The top part, or lid, of the sarcophagus shows four main events. Two of these are likely about the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The other two show events around the birth of Jesus, including the three Wise Men following the star to Bethlehem. This is also where the plaque identifying Adelphia and her husband Valerius is located.
Scenes on the Middle Section
The middle section of the sarcophagus has eight different scenes, with four on each side of the central circle that shows Adelphia and her husband.
On the left side, you can see:
- Adam and Eve working after leaving the Garden of Eden.
- Peter denying Jesus with a rooster nearby.
- Jesus healing a woman who was sick.
- Moses receiving the Ten Commandments.
On the right side, you can see:
- Abraham and Isaac (likely from the story where God tests Abraham's faith).
- Christ healing a blind person.
- The miracle of Jesus feeding many people with a few loaves of bread and fish.
- Jesus bringing back to life the son of a widow from Nain.
Scenes on the Bottom Section
The lowest part of the sarcophagus also has several important scenes:
- Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refusing to worship a pagan idol.
- The miracle at the Marriage at Cana, where Jesus turned water into wine.
- The Adoration of the Magi, where the Wise Men worship the baby Jesus.
- Adam, Eve, and the Serpent in the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
- Jesus entering Jerusalem.
