Sargent's Pond is a beautiful man-made pond located on Sargent Road in Brookline, Massachusetts. It covers about 3 acres, which is like three football fields! This special pond was created in the late 1870s by a famous person named Charles Sprague Sargent. It was a central part of his family's large estate, called Holm Lea.

Discovering Sargent's Pond

Sargent's Pond is a peaceful spot in Brookline, Massachusetts. It's not a natural lake, but was carefully designed and built by people. The pond was made by building a small dam across a flowing brook. This allowed water to collect and form the pond we see today.

Who Created the Pond?

The pond was created by Charles Sprague Sargent. He was a very important person in the world of plants and nature. Charles Sargent is best known for being the first director of the Arnold Arboretum. This is a famous place where many different kinds of trees and shrubs are grown and studied.

Sargent created the pond as a main feature of his family's large property, the Holm Lea estate. He used ideas similar to those he used at the Arboretum. He planned the estate with beautiful views and a wide variety of trees and shrubs.

A Historic Landscape

Even though the Holm Lea estate has been divided into smaller properties over the years, the roads that lead to the pond still follow the original paths of the estate. The area around the pond still has many natural-looking plants. Charles Sargent used to open his estate to the public sometimes. People loved to visit, especially to see his beautiful rhododendrons. While some of these specific plants have since died, the pond remains a lovely and historic spot.

A Special Place in History

Because of its unique design and history, Sargent's Pond is recognized as an important landmark. In 1985, the pond and the land right around it were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's considered a significant historical site that is worth preserving for future generations.
