Sasao H. Gouland (born June 2, 1933 – died March 6, 2011) was an important leader in Micronesia. He served as the governor of Chuuk State from 1990 to 1996.
Early Life and Education
Sasao Gouland was born in Weno, Chuuk, on June 2, 1933. Weno was known as "Moen" back then. He went to primary school in Chuuk State. Later, he finished high school at Pacific Islands Central School in Pohnpei State.
He continued his studies at the Fiji School of Medicine. After his medical training, he returned to Chuuk State. He worked there as a dentist. He even became the Director of Dental Services for the area.
Political Career
Sasao Gouland started his political journey in 1968. From 1967 to 1978, he was a member of Congress. This was during the time when the region was called the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.
He also worked as a special advisor. From April 1985 to May 1986, he advised the Governor of Chuuk on health services. In 1990, the people of Chuuk elected him as their governor. He served in this role until he retired in 1996.
After Retirement
Even after retiring, Sasao Gouland stayed active. He served on many important groups and councils. For example, he was the chairman of the Micronesian Maritime Authority Board. He also led the Truk Trading Company Board.
In 2005, he joined the Board of Directors for the FSM Telecommunications Corporation. He became the vice-chairman of this board from December 2008 to December 2009. He was reappointed to the FSM Telecommunications Board in 2010. He continued to serve there until he passed away in 2011.
