Satoshi Tsunami (都並 敏史, Tsunami Satoshi, born 14 August 1961) is a famous Japanese football player and manager. He was born on August 14, 1961. Tsunami was known as a strong defender during his playing days. He played for the Japan national team for many years. After he stopped playing, he became a football manager. He is currently the manager of Japan Football League club, Briobecca Urayasu.

Playing Career: Club Teams

Satoshi Tsunami started his football journey in the youth system of Yomiuri. This club later became known as Verdy Kawasaki. In 1980, he joined the senior team, which played in the Japan Soccer League.

His time with Yomiuri/Verdy Kawasaki was very successful. The club won the Japan Soccer League championship five times. They also won the JSL Cup three times and the Emperor's Cup three times. This period was known as a "golden era" for the club. Tsunami was recognized as one of the best players. He was chosen for the "Best Eleven" team three times in a row, from 1982 to 1984.

In 1992, the Japan Soccer League was replaced by a new league called the J1 League. Tsunami continued to play, but he didn't get as much playing time. Towards the end of his career, he played for Avispa Fukuoka from 1996 to 1997. Then he moved to Bellmare Hiratsuka from 1997 to 1998. He retired from playing football in 1998.

Playing Career: National Team

Satoshi Tsunami was a key player for the Japan national team. He played 78 games for his country and scored 2 goals. His first international game was on December 22, 1980. It was a World Cup qualification match against Singapore.

He scored his first goal for Japan on September 20, 1986. This was during an Asian Games match against Nepal. After 1987, he was not selected for the national team for a few years.

In May 1992, Tsunami was called back to play for Japan after five years. He became an important part of the team that won the 1992 Asian Cup. He played in almost all of Japan's games during this tournament. He only missed one game because he was suspended.

Tsunami was so important that the national coach, Hans Ooft, wanted him for the 1994 World Cup qualification. Even though Tsunami was injured, the coach hoped he would recover. However, his injury was worse than expected, and he couldn't play any games in the tournament. Japan did not qualify for the World Cup that year. Many fans believe Tsunami's absence was a big reason why Japan didn't make it. This event is sadly remembered as the "Agony of Doha" by Japanese football fans.

Coaching Career

After his playing career ended, Satoshi Tsunami started working in football in other ways. He became a commentator on television. He also coached young players at Tokyo Verdy's youth academy. In 2004, he earned a special S-Class Coaching License. This license is needed to manage a J.League club.

In 2005, he became the manager of J2 League team Vegalta Sendai. The team finished fourth, but they didn't get promoted to the higher league. Tsunami left after one season. In 2006, he worked as an assistant coach for Tokyo Verdy. Again, the team didn't get promoted, and he was dismissed.

In 2007, he became the manager of Cerezo Osaka, another J2 team. However, he was dismissed in May after a difficult start to the season. In 2008, he managed Yokohama FC, also in the J2 League, but he was fired at the end of that year.

After an 11-year break from managing, Tsunami returned to football. On November 20, 2018, he was officially announced as the manager of Briobecca Urayasu. He has been managing the club since 2019.

Personal Life

Satoshi Tsunami's son, Yuta Tsunami, is also a professional footballer. He currently plays for Nara Club.
