Saturday Superstore was a popular British TV show for kids. It aired on BBC1 every Saturday morning. The show ran from October 1982 to April 1987. It was a lot like an earlier show called Multi-Coloured Swap Shop. Famous presenters included Mike Read, Sarah Greene, Keith Chegwin, and John Craven.

The show was known for its fun mix of music, guests, and phone calls. Kids could call in and chat with their favorite stars. It was a big part of Saturday mornings for many young people in the 1980s.

Discovering New Talent: Search for a Superstar

A really popular part of Saturday Superstore was its talent show. It was called "Search for a Superstar." This segment gave young, talented kids a chance to shine.

Who Won the Superstar Contest?

In 1986, the winners were a group called Claire and Friends. They even had a song that became a top hit! The song was called "It's 'Orrible Being in Love (When You're 8½)." The next year, in 1987, a group named Juvenile Jazz won. One of their members, Nigel Ipinson, later became a keyboard player for famous bands like OMD and sometimes Stone Roses.

Calling the Superstore: The Famous Phone Number

For most of its time on air, Saturday Superstore used the same phone number. It was 01-811-8055. This number was well-known to kids across the UK. It was the same number used by the show that came before it.

Memorable Moments and Special Guests

Saturday Superstore had many exciting and funny moments. Famous pop groups and other guests often appeared on the show.

Pop Stars and Prizes

The pop group Wham! was a guest on the show. They answered questions from callers. They also announced competition winners. Another time, the band The Flying Pickets offered a unique prize. It was a tea-towel with the face of a famous thinker, Karl Marx, on it.

Music from the Show

The presenters of the show even released their own song. It was called "Two Left Feet." However, this song did not become a hit. The show's main theme song was "Down At The Superstore." A group called The Assistants released this song. The Assistants included musicians like Dave Edmunds and Suzi Quatro.

When a Prime Minister Visited

In 1987, a very important guest appeared on the show. It was Margaret Thatcher, who was the Prime Minister at the time. This happened before a big election. She made headlines when a young girl kept asking her a tough question. The girl wanted to know where the Prime Minister would be if there was a nuclear war.

Looking Back: It Started With Swap Shop

In 2006, the BBC made a special show. It was called It Started With Swap Shop. This show looked back at famous Saturday morning TV programs. Saturday Superstore had its own section in this special.

Reunion of Presenters

During the special, Keith Chegwin chatted with Mike Read and Crow. Mike Read, John Craven, and Keith Chegwin also took part in a quiz. It was called the 'Now That's What I Call Saturday Mornings Quiz.' The special also showed many fun clips from Saturday Superstore.
