Saturnino Martín Cerezo (born February 11, 1866 – died December 2, 1945) was a brave Spanish military officer. He is most famous for leading a small group of Spanish soldiers during a very long and difficult event called the Siege of Baler. This siege happened in the Philippines.
Life and Military Career
Martín Cerezo joined the Spanish army when he was young. He became an officer. At that time, the Philippines was a territory controlled by Spain. Martín Cerezo served there with the Spanish army.
The Siege of Baler
In 1898, a war was happening in the Philippines. It was called the Philippine War of Independence. Things were not going well for Spain. Martín Cerezo's group of soldiers was sent to a town called Baler.
In June 1898, soldiers from the Philippines attacked Cerezo's group. His commanding officer, Juan Alonso Zayas, was badly hurt. The Spanish soldiers quickly found themselves trapped inside a church in Baler. This began the Siege of Baler.
Martín Cerezo took charge of the soldiers when his commander, Zayas, died from his injuries in October. The siege was very long and difficult. The soldiers were stuck in the church for many months.
The siege finally ended on June 2, 1899. The Spanish soldiers learned that the Spanish–American War had finished. This war meant that Spain no longer ruled the Philippines.
Martín Cerezo and the soldiers who survived were sent back to Spain. Their brave defense of Baler was highly praised in Spain. They showed great courage and determination.
