Saud bin Muhammad Al Thani (born February 28, 1966 – died November 9, 2014) was a prince from Qatar. He was known for his important work as the minister of Culture, Arts, and Heritage. He also became famous around the world as a very keen collector of art. He collected items for his own private collection and for several museums in Qatar that belonged to the government.

Saud bin Muhammad Al Thani was a member of the royal family in Qatar. He played a big role in developing culture and art in his country. He helped create many important collections for Qatar's museums.

His Work in Culture and Art

From 1997, Sheikh Saud was the Minister of Culture, Arts, and Heritage. His job was to gather amazing collections for new, world-class museums in Qatar. These museums included a Museum of Islamic Art, a Natural History Museum, and a Museum of Photography. He also planned a museum for traditional clothes and textiles.

In 2005, he left his position as minister.

His Many Collections

Sheikh Saud collected many different kinds of items. He had a very rare camera lens, beautiful furniture, and classic cars. He also collected items related to natural history, sparkling jewelry, and even bicycles! It was sometimes hard to tell if these collections were for him personally or for the country of Qatar.

Helping Wildlife

Sheikh Saud cared deeply about animals. He started the Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP) in Qatar. This special center helps protect and breed rare and endangered species. It is especially known for its work with rare birds, like the Spix's macaw. The Al Wabra center also helps protect endangered Arabian animals, such as the Arabian sand gazelle and the Arabian oryx.

Photography Awards

In 2000, Sheikh Saud also created the Al-Thani Awards. This competition became known as the biggest photography contest in the Middle East. In 2010, about 54,000 people entered the competition.

His Family

Sheikh Saud bin Muhammad Al Thani was married to Sheikha Amna bint Ahmad bin Hassan bin Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani. He passed away in London on November 9, 2014.
