The Savegre River is a beautiful river in Costa Rica. It flows all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Many people think it is one of the cleanest rivers in the country.
The river starts high up in the mountains. Its source is at Quebrada Providencia. This spot is in the Cerro de la Muerte, which is part of the Talamanca mountain range. The river begins at a height of 3,491 meters above sea level. After joining with the Division River, it travels about 41 kilometers. This journey takes it through very rugged land. Finally, it empties into the Pacific Ocean.

What is the Savegre River Basin?
The area drained by the Savegre River is called its basin. This basin covers about 590 square kilometers. It flows through four different areas, or cantons, in Costa Rica. These cantons are Dota, Tarrazú, Pérez Zeledón, and Quepos.
Why is the Savegre River Basin Special?
The Savegre River basin is very special because it has many different types of nature. Scientists have found 47 different ecosystems here. An ecosystem is a community of living things and their environment. Some of these are natural, meaning they are untouched by humans. Others are semi-natural or cultural, shaped by human activities.
Because it is so important, much of the basin is protected. It is part of two national parks: the Los Quetzales National Park and the Manuel Antonio National Park. These parks help keep the area safe for plants and animals.
Savegre River: A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
On June 14, 2017, something very important happened. The Savegre River basin was named a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. UNESCO is a part of the United Nations that helps protect important places. Being a Biosphere Reserve means the area is special for both nature and people. It shows how people can live and work while also protecting the environment.
