Club History
Early Years and Growth
The Savona Foot-Ball Club was started in 1907. Two people named Cesare Lanza and Nicolò Pessano founded the club. They played their first championship games in 1910.
Savona has played in Italy's top football league, the Italian Football Championship, two times in the 1920s. They also spent many seasons in Serie B, which is the second-highest league. Their last time in Serie B was during the 1966–67 season.
Challenges and Successes
After playing in Serie C, the team moved down to Serie D. They stayed in Serie D for about 20 years. For a short time, between 2002 and 2004, they played in Serie C2 before going back to Serie D.
During this period, Savona won their only major trophy. They won the Coppa Italia Dilettanti in 1991. This is a cup competition for amateur football teams.
Recent Times
In the 2009–10 season, Savona was promoted from Serie D to Lega Pro Seconda Divisione. This was a great step up for the club.
However, in December 2011, the club faced serious money problems. It was almost shut down. But in March 2012, a person named Aldo Dellepiane stepped in. He bought the club for a very small amount of money and took on some of its debts. This saved the club from closing.
In their first season with the new owner, Savona did very well. They earned promotion to Lega Pro Prima Divisione. In the 2013–14 season, Savona surprised many people. They almost got promoted to Serie B again! They finished sixth in their league. They even beat Vicenza in the playoffs. But they were eventually defeated by Pro Vercelli in the semi-finals.
In the 2014–2015 season, Savona played in Lega Pro. They worked hard to avoid moving down to Serie D. In the summer of 2015, the club faced a penalty for breaking some rules. This meant they started the season with 6 fewer points.
Team Colours and Badge
The team's main colours are white and blue. These colours are seen in their uniforms.
The club's badge is shaped like an oval. It has white and blue stripes, just like their team colours. The club's name is also on the badge. There is also a red and white shield on the badge. This shield has an eagle on top of it. This part of the badge represents the city of Savona's official coat of arms.
