Scholtzia capitata is a special type of shrub, which is a small, woody plant. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family, just like eucalyptus trees! This plant is found only in Western Australia, which means it's endemic there. You won't find it growing naturally anywhere else in the world.
Meet Scholtzia capitata
This plant is a shrub that stands up straight. It usually grows to be about 0.3 to 2.5 meters tall. That's like being as short as a small bush or as tall as a person!
What Does It Look Like?
Scholtzia capitata has pretty pink and white flowers. These flowers bloom for a long time, from July all the way to December. The plant doesn't have many leaves, but its flowers are very popular. People often pick them to make beautiful flower bunches.
Where Does It Grow?
You can find Scholtzia capitata in certain parts of Western Australia. It likes to grow in areas with rolling hills and in places that get wet during the winter. It especially loves sandy soils. These areas are mainly in the Mid West and Wheatbelt regions of the state.
Who Discovered It?
The first time this plant was officially described was in 1867. A famous plant expert, called a botanist, named George Bentham wrote about it. He included it in his big book called Flora Australiensis.
Later, another botanist named Ferdinand von Mueller also described this plant in 1882. He gave it a different name, Baeckea capitata, but now we know it's the same plant. So, Baeckea capitata is considered a synonym for Scholtzia capitata.
