School holiday facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

School holidays are times when schools close, and students get a break from classes. The exact dates and how long these holidays last can be very different all over the world. In many places, governments make rules about how many days public schools must be open. However, private schools often get to choose their own holiday schedules.

Popular School Breaks

Christmas and Winter Holidays

Many countries celebrate Christmas Holidays. During this time, students don't go to school. They can spend time with their families and friends. In countries in the Northern Hemisphere, like the United States or Canada, these holidays usually last about two weeks. This is because it's winter there.

However, in the Southern Hemisphere, like Australia or South Africa, Christmas happens during their summer. So, their Christmas holidays are often much longer. They can last from six to fourteen weeks, depending on the country. These longer breaks are their main summer vacation.

Easter and Spring Breaks

Christian countries also celebrate Easter holidays. These breaks usually last for one or two weeks. In the Northern Hemisphere, Easter happens in spring. So, this break is often called "Spring Break." It's a chance for students to relax before the end of the school year.

In the Southern Hemisphere, Easter happens during autumn. There, it's simply known as the Easter holiday. It's a shorter break in the middle of their school year.

Summer Vacation Around the World

Summer vacation is the longest break for students in many parts of the world. Its length and timing vary a lot.

In places like the United States, summer vacation often lasts from June until September. This can be as long as fourteen weeks. Students have a long break to enjoy the warm weather.

In England, summer vacation is shorter, usually about six weeks. It runs from late July to early September. This is because English schools have other breaks. They have two weeks off for Christmas and two weeks for Easter. They also have several one-week breaks throughout the year.

Australia, being in the Southern Hemisphere, has its summer holidays at a different time. Their main break is also about six weeks long, similar to England. It usually runs from mid-December to late January. Australian schools also have two-week breaks for Easter and another two-week break in October. They do not have as many one-week breaks as England.
