Scipione Agnelli's Life

Early Life and Education

Scipione Agnelli was born in Mantua, a city in Italy. His father, Count Lepido Agnelli, worked for the powerful House of Gonzaga family. His mother was Girolama Pavese.

Scipione grew up and studied at the Gonzaga family's courts in Mantua and Casale. He learned a lot about theology, which is the study of religion. He also studied canon law, which is the law of the Church.

In 1611, he gave a special speech at the funeral of Eleonora de' Medici. She was the wife of Duke Vincenzo I Gonzaga, a very important ruler.

Becoming a Bishop

Ferdinando Gonzaga, who was the Duke of Mantua and Monferrato, suggested that Scipione become a bishop. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Catholic Church. Scipione was chosen to be the bishop of Casale Monferrato. He officially became a bishop on February 18, 1624.

However, a big conflict called the War of the Mantuan Succession made things difficult. This war was about who would rule Mantua. Because of the fighting, Scipione could not do his work as bishop in Casale for many years.

Scipione Agnelli passed away in Casale Monferrato in 1653.
