Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster: Next Generation at RCDB

The Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster is an exciting indoor steel wild mouse roller coaster. You can find it at Warner Bros. Movie World on the Gold Coast in Australia. This ride is based on the 2002 live-action movie Scooby-Doo. The movie was filmed right next to the park while the ride was being built.

In 2018, the ride got a big makeover with new themes and special effects. It reopened as Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster: Next Generation with a fresh story. The ride closed for updates in January 2023 and is planned to reopen later in 2025.

History of the Coaster

On June 3, 1991, Warner Bros. Movie World first opened its doors. One of its original attractions was Warner Bros. Classics & Great Gremlins Adventure. In late 2001, the park decided to close this attraction to make room for a brand new ride.

The Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster officially opened to the public on June 17, 2002. It quickly became one of the park's most popular rides. In 2018, Warner Bros. Movie World closed the coaster for several months for a major upgrade. It reopened later that year with its new name, Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster: Next Generation.

Ride Features and Design

What is a Wild Mouse Coaster?

The Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster is a special type of roller coaster called a Wild Mouse. It was built by a company called Mack Rides. Warner Bros. Movie World worked with Mack Rides to create a unique Wild Mouse coaster. It's different from other models like The Fly.

The entire ride is inside a large building, making it a dark ride. This means most of the ride takes place in the dark, with lights and effects adding to the spooky fun.

Ride Numbers and Facts

The Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster has about 530 meters (1,739 feet) of track. The highest point of the ride is 17 meters (56 feet) tall. You reach this height using a special elevator lift.

The biggest drop on the ride is 7 meters (23 feet), and it happens while you're going backwards! At this point, riders can reach a top speed of 44.6 kilometers per hour (27.7 mph). One full ride cycle lasts about 4 minutes and 13 seconds. The coaster can handle around 1000 guests every hour.

The Spooky Theme

The Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster is designed to look and feel like the 2002 live-action movie Scooby-Doo. The main entrance looks just like the Spooky Island Castle from the film. Even the ride's eighteen cars are designed to look like the vehicles used in the movie. Each car can seat four people, with two rows of two riders.

The "Next Generation" update in late 2018 brought new themes and changes to the ride's story. This made the experience even more exciting and modern.

On-Ride Photos

There's a camera on the Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster that takes your picture during the ride. The photo is snapped in the first dark ride section, right as you drop in front of some swinging axes. You can see and buy these photos at the exit gift shop. They are also available with the Fast Photo digital pass.

Waiting in Line (The Queue)

The entrance to the Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster looks exactly like the Spooky Island Castle from the 2002 film. This castle entrance hides the huge building where the actual ride is located. On most days, you walk up steps into the castle to join the queue line.

On very busy days, an outdoor overflow queue is used. Once inside the castle, you'll see a cool monster fountain. There's also a video playing about how the 2002 Scooby-Doo movie was made. Closer to the loading station, the queue winds back and forth.

The Ride Itself

Original Ride Version

When the ride first opened, the beginning was like a typical dark ride. It had cool effects, including a swinging axe and other spooky moving figures. An animatronic Scooby-Doo would tell riders which way their car would go next.

Eventually, the car would reach a platform that went up vertically. As it rose, it would tilt from side to side, making you feel like you might fall out! You could hear Scooby-Doo and Daphne talking. Once at the top of the elevator, the car dropped backwards 7 meters (23 feet) onto a spinning turntable. This spun the car around before it continued on the roller coaster track.

This is where the true wild mouse part of the ride began. This section had smoke, lights, and laser effects. There was even a giant spider that had been used in other park events. The ride was set to music by the U.S. punk band MXPX, playing a cover of the Scooby-Doo theme song. The ride ended with another animatronic Scooby showing riders the way out, followed by a very small drop to the exit platform.

The "Next Generation" Update (2018)

Even though the roller coaster track is the same, the ride's story changed a lot in 2018. It's still based on the 2002 movie. Now, Scooby-Doo only appears at the very beginning and end.

The story is that creatures from the movie have escaped and are attacking riders! After leaving the station, projection effects make it look like monsters are breaking through a wall. The car gets away just in time. In the mirror scene, more projections show two monsters attacking your vehicle.

You then pass by several voodoo statues before reaching the platform lift. Daphne and Shaggy see and talk to Scrappy Doo. As the lift rises, Scrappy Doo appears on screens around you and changes into his monster form, roaring! Shaggy then says his famous line from the movie, "You're a bad puppy!", and a claw pulls the Daemon Ritus from Scrappy's chest.

The car then drops backwards to the turntable, just like before. However, the turntable area is now surrounded by a disco-like box with mirrors and neon lights. The main wild mouse section is mostly the same, but a vat holding souls from the movie is now in the center of the room.

As you leave this section, two projection screens on either side of the car show creatures. But when a disco skull on the ceiling shines, the creatures get scared! The ride then makes its final small drop. This small section is now part of the story, with a screen above showing one of the creatures screaming in the "Tiki Doll Lounge." As riders leave, Scooby-Doo is seen hiding in a hut, saying "I'm scared!" Riders then exit through a gift shop where they can buy Scooby-Doo items and their on-ride photos.
