Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster: Next Generation at RCDB

The Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster is an exciting roller coaster at Warner Bros. Movie World in Gold Coast, Australia. It's a special kind of roller coaster called an enclosed wild mouse. This means it's inside a building, making it a "dark ride" with cool effects.

The ride is based on the 2002 live-action movie Scooby-Doo. Fun fact: the movie was filmed right next to the park while the ride was being built! In 2018, the ride got a big update with new effects and a new story. It reopened as Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster: Next Generation. The ride closed in January 2023 for more updates and is expected to open again in 2025.

Ride History

Warner Bros. Movie World first opened its doors on June 3, 1991. One of its original attractions was Warner Bros. Classics & Great Gremlins Adventure. In late 2001, the park decided to close this attraction. They wanted to build a brand-new ride for 2002.

On June 17, 2002, the Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster officially opened. It quickly became a popular ride. It's one of the park's first attractions that is still thrilling guests today! In 2018, the ride closed for several months for a big makeover. When it reopened later that year, it was called Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster: Next Generation.

Ride Features

Coaster Design

The Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster is a Wild Mouse type. It was built by a company called Mack Rides. Warner Bros. Movie World worked closely with Mack Rides to create a unique Wild Mouse coaster. It's different from other models you might have seen.

The entire ride is inside a large show building. This makes it an enclosed dark ride. You'll experience spooky surprises and special effects in the dark!

Ride Numbers

The Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster has 530 metres (1,740 ft) of track. That's about the length of five football fields! To reach the highest point, 17 metres (56 ft) up, you go up a special elevator lift.

The biggest drop on the ride is 7 metres (23 ft). What's cool is that this drop happens backwards! At this point, you'll reach the top speed of 44.6 kilometres per hour (27.7 mph). One full ride takes about 4 minutes and 13 seconds. The ride can handle about 1000 guests every hour.

Ride Theme

The Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster is all about the 2002 live-action movie, Scooby-Doo. The main entrance looks just like the Spooky Island Castle from the film. Even the ride's eighteen cars are designed to look like the vehicles from the movie. Each car can seat four people, with two rows of two.

In late 2018, new decorations and effects were added. The ride's name also changed slightly to "Next Generation." This showed off the new story and updated look.

On-Ride Photos

There's a camera on the Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster that takes your picture! It snaps your photo in the first dark ride part, right as you drop past some swinging axes. You can see your photo on screens in the gift shop at the exit. You can also buy it as part of a digital photo pass.

Waiting in Line

The entrance to the Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster looks exactly like the Spooky Island Castle from the 2002 Scooby-Doo movie. This castle hides the huge building where the ride is located. On most days, you walk up steps into the castle to join the line.

On busy days, there's an outdoor waiting area that leads into the side of the castle. Once you're inside the castle, you'll see a cool monster fountain. There's also a video playing about how the 2002 Scooby-Doo movie was made. Closer to where you get on the ride, the line winds back and forth.

The Ride Journey

Original Version

When the ride starts, the first part feels like a spooky dark ride. You'll see cool effects, like a swinging axe and other scary-themed moving figures. Along the way, an animated Scooby-Doo tells you which way your car will go next. Eventually, you reach a platform.

This platform then goes up vertically, tilting side to side. It feels like you might fall out! As it rises, you can hear Scooby-Doo and Daphne talking. Once your car reaches the very top of the elevator, it drops backwards 7 metres (23 ft)! Then, a spinning platform turns your car around. This is where the real wild mouse part of the roller coaster begins.

This section has lots of smoke, lights, and laser effects. There's even a giant spider! Music plays, featuring a rock version of the Scooby-Doo theme song. The ride finishes with another animated Scooby showing you the way out. Then, there's one very small drop to reach the exit platform.

Next Generation (2018 Update)

Even though the roller coaster track is the same, the ride's story changed a lot in 2018. It's still based on the 2002 movie, but with new twists! Scooby-Doo doesn't appear until the very end of the ride now.

The monsters from the movie have escaped and are attacking! As your car leaves the station, special lights and projections make it look like two monsters are breaking through a wall. But your car gets away just in time! After the spooky dark ride section, you'll see a mirror scene. Now, more projections show the two monsters attacking your car.

Next, you pass by several voodoo statues before reaching the platform lift. Daphne and Shaggy see and talk to Scrappy Doo. As the lift goes up, Scrappy appears on screens around you and turns into his monster form, roaring! Shaggy then says his famous line, "You're a bad puppy!" A claw from the movie pulls the Daemon Ritus from Scrappy's chest.

Your car then drops backwards to the spinning platform, just like before. But now, the platform is surrounded by a disco-like box with mirrors and neon lights! The main wild mouse section is mostly the same. However, the vat holding the souls from the movie now sits in the middle of the room.

As you leave this section, two screens on either side of the car show creatures. But when a disco skull on the ceiling shines, the creatures get scared! The ride then makes its final small drop. This small part is now part of the story. A screen above it shows one of the creatures screaming in the "Tiki Doll Lounge." As you get off the ride and walk through the lounge, you'll see Scooby-Doo hiding in a hut, saying "I'm scared!" You then exit through a gift shop where you can buy Scooby-Doo items and your on-ride photo.
