Scossa was once a small town in Nevada where people mined for gold. Today, it's a ghost town, meaning no one lives there anymore. You can find it in Pershing County, Nevada.

History of Scossa

Scossa started because of a big discovery. In 1930, two brothers named James and Charles Scossa found gold. They found it in the Antelope mountain range, which is south of where Scossa would be.

Their first gold claim was called the North Star Mine. Later, this mine became part of a bigger company called Dawes Gold Mine, Inc. Another important mine, the Hawkeye Mine, began working in 1934. This was after even more gold was found.

The town of Scossa grew to support these mines. It provided services for the miners and their families.

Why Scossa Became a Ghost Town

By 1939, most of the gold and silver in the area had been dug up. This meant there wasn't much left for the miners to find. Because of this, the town of Scossa started to shrink.

Some smaller mining operations continued for a while. They looked for gold and even a metal called titanium. But these efforts were not very successful. By 1955, the last mining stopped. Today, the place where Scossa once stood is completely empty.

What's Left at Scossa?

Even though Scossa is a ghost town, you can still see some signs it was once there. One building is still standing at the old town site. You can also find other things left behind. These include a large metal tank and other building materials. These items are clues that a town once thrived in this quiet spot.
