Scott Brady (born Gerard Kenneth Tierney; September 13, 1924 – April 16, 1985) was an American actor. He was famous for his roles in Western movies and for appearing on many television shows. He played the main character in the TV series Shotgun Slade from 1959 to 1961.
Early Life and Beginnings
Gerard Kenneth Tierney was born in Brooklyn, New York. His father was a police chief in New York City. Scott had two brothers, Lawrence and Edward, who also became actors. He chose the name Scott Brady from a short story. In the story, the hero was a boxer named Scott Brady.
Scott grew up in Westchester County, New York. Friends called him "Roddy" when he was young. He was good at sports in high school, playing basketball, football, and track. He wanted to be a football coach or a radio announcer. But first, he joined the United States Navy.
During World War II, he worked as an aviation mechanic. He served overseas on the USS Norton Sound. After leaving the Navy in 1946, Scott moved to Los Angeles. His older brother Lawrence was already an actor there. Scott worked as a taxi driver and a lumberjack. He then studied acting at the Beverly Hills Drama School. He also took voice lessons to change his Brooklyn accent.
Acting Career Highlights
Scott Brady started his film career in 1948. His first movie was In This Corner, where he played a boxer. He often took on tough-guy roles in movies. Some of these films included He Walked by Night and Undertow. He also starred in the romantic comedy The Model and the Marriage Broker. Another famous role was in the Western drama Johnny Guitar.
From 1953 to 1956, Scott appeared on TV shows like Lux Video Theatre. He also appeared on The Ford Television Theatre. In 1955, he played Ted Slater in an episode of The Loretta Young Show. He was also on Studio 57 a couple of times. In 1957, he was in "The Barbed Wire Preacher" on Crossroads.
On December 26, 1957, Scott played William Bent on Playhouse 90. He also appeared on Schlitz Playhouse five times. One episode, "The Salted Mine," became the pilot for his own TV show. This show was the Western series Shotgun Slade. It ran for 78 episodes from 1959 to 1961.
Besides Shotgun Slade, Scott appeared in many other TV Westerns. These included Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theatre and The High Chaparral. He also guest-starred on Lancer and The Virginian. He appeared three times on the popular show Gunsmoke. In 1958, he played Sergeant Matt Blake in the film Ambush at Cimarron Pass.
In 1961, he played John Keller on General Electric Theater. He was also Ernie Taggart on Checkmate. In 1962, Scott played reporter Floyd Gibbons on The Untouchables. The next year, he was Bill Floyd in The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. In 1967, he guest-starred on Judd, for the Defense.
During the mid-1960s, Scott starred in several Western films made by A.C. Lyles. In 1969, he was Budd Blake in Bracken's World. That same year, he played John Harris on Adam 12. Scott was also in the film $ (1971). In 1973, he played Davey Collier in Banacek. In 1974, he was a pit boss in an episode of Movin' On. From 1975 to 1977, Scott had a regular role as Vinnie on Police Story.
On February 15, 1977, he played Jack Feeney, Shirley Feeney's father, on Laverne & Shirley. He also appeared as Joe Foley on four episodes of All in the Family in 1976. He was on The Rockford Files five times. In 1977, he played Lou Caruso on Welcome Back, Kotter. The next year, he was Matt Zaleski in the TV miniseries Wheels.
Scott Brady played Captain Scofield in the 1981 TV movie McClain's Law. In 1983, he was Alex Kidd on Simon and Simon. Scott's last movie role was Sheriff Frank Reilly in the 1984 film Gremlins.
Death
Scott Brady passed away on April 16, 1985. He was 60 years old. He died from breathing problems in a hospital in West Los Angeles.
