Early Life and First Steps in Acting
Scott Glenn has both Irish and Native American family roots. When he was a child, he was often sick. For a whole year, he had to stay in bed, even getting scarlet fever. But he worked hard with special training programs and got better. He even overcame a limp he had.
After finishing high school in Pittsburgh, Scott went to the College of William & Mary. He studied English there. Then, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served for three years. After that, in 1963, he worked as a news and sports reporter for a newspaper called the Kenosha News.
Scott wanted to become a writer, but he found it hard to write good conversations for his stories. To learn how to write better dialogue, he started taking acting classes. This was the beginning of his acting career!
Starting His Acting Career
Scott Glenn made his first appearance on Broadway in a play called The Impossible Years in 1965. He joined an acting class taught by George Morrison. To help pay for his lessons, he helped direct plays for other students. He also performed in shows at the La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club.
In 1968, he joined The Actors Studio, which is a famous place for actors to train. After this, he started getting roles in professional theater and on TV. Some of his early TV jobs included playing Hal Currin in the crime series Hawk in 1966 and Calvin Brenner on the TV show The Edge of Night. In 1970, director James Bridges gave him his first movie role in The Baby Maker.
Moving to Hollywood and Beyond
Scott Glenn spent eight years in Los Angeles, California, which is a big city for movies. He acted in small movie roles and appeared on TV, including a TV movie called Gargoyles. In 1978, Scott and his family moved away from Los Angeles to Ketchum, Idaho. There, he worked as a barman, a huntsman, and a mountain ranger. Sometimes, he would still act in plays in Seattle.
He appeared in Francis Ford Coppola's famous movie Apocalypse Now (1979). He also worked with other well-known directors like Jonathan Demme and Robert Altman.
In 1980, he played Wes Hightower, an ex-convict, in the movie Urban Cowboy. After that, he starred in many different types of films. These included the horror film The Keep (1983) and action movies like Wild Geese II (1985) and Silverado (1985). He also acted in dramas such as The Right Stuff (1983) and The River (1984). During the 1980s, he often played both good guys and bad guys. He returned to Broadway in a play called Burn This in 1987.
