Early Life and Education
Scott Glenn has Irish and Native American family history. When he was a child, he was often sick. For a whole year, he had to stay in bed because of illnesses like scarlet fever. To get stronger, he started intense training in sports like boxing and wrestling. This helped him recover, though he walked with a limp for a few years.
After high school in Pittsburgh, Glenn went to the College of William & Mary. He studied English and graduated in 1961. After college, he served in the United States Marine Corps for three years.
Later, he worked as a reporter for a newspaper in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He wanted to be an author, but he found it hard to write good dialogue (the words characters say to each other). To get better at it, he started taking acting classes.

Becoming a Star
In 1978, Glenn and his family moved to Ketchum, Idaho. He took a break from acting and worked as a barman and mountain ranger. He returned to acting in the 1979 film Apocalypse Now.
His big break came in 1980 when he played an ex-convict named Wes Hightower in the movie Urban Cowboy. This role made him famous. Throughout the 1980s, he starred in many popular films. He played heroes and villains in action movies like Silverado and dramas like The Right Stuff, where he played astronaut Alan Shepard.
