The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory is a special place for looking at the stars and planets. It is located in Scotland, near a beautiful lake called Loch Doon in East Ayrshire. This observatory sits on top of a hill, giving it amazing views of the night sky.

It's found at the edge of the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park. A Dark Sky Park is an area where light pollution is kept very low. This means the sky is super dark, making it perfect for seeing stars, galaxies, and other space wonders clearly. The observatory is also part of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere. This means it's a special place recognized for its natural beauty and efforts to protect the environment.

The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory was built in 2012. It was officially opened by Alex Salmond, who was the First Minister of Scotland at the time. The First Minister is like the head of the government in Scotland.

What Can You See There?

In 2017, the observatory got even bigger and better! They added a digital planetarium. A planetarium is a special room that can show you what the night sky looks like, even during the day. It can project images of stars, planets, and galaxies onto a dome-shaped ceiling. John Duncan, who was the Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran, officially opened this new part. A Lord Lieutenant is a representative of the King or Queen in a specific area.

Since it opened, lots and lots of people have visited the observatory. It has become one of the most popular places to visit in Scotland.
