Visual Arts Scotland (VAS) is a group that helps show off art in Scotland. It's based in Edinburgh and has about 1000 members. These members are visual artists from all over the country. VAS includes many different types of artists. You'll find painters, textile artists, sculptors, and photographers. They also have ceramicists, who work with clay. Every year, VAS holds a big art show. This show takes place at the Royal Scottish Academy building. VAS is also a registered charity.
The Story of Visual Arts Scotland
Visual Arts Scotland has an interesting history. It started in 1924 with a different name. A man named William McDougall created it. He called it the Scottish Society of Women Artists.
He started it because his daughter, Lily McDougall, was a great painter. But in the early 1900s, it was hard for women artists to get noticed. Most art groups were mainly for men. William wanted to give women a chance to show their amazing art. He wanted to help them keep creating.
This group for women artists continued for many years. Then, in the late 1980s, things changed. The group was renamed the Scottish Artists and Artist Craftsmen. For the first time, men were allowed to join too!
Later, between 1997 and 1999, the group changed its name again. It became Visual Arts Scotland, or VAS, which is what it's called today. Alison Dunlop RSW was the President when this happened. Today, VAS has many different artists from all over Scotland. Recent Presidents include Diana Hope, Robbie Bushe, Andrew Mackenzie, and Sarah Calmus.
