Visual Arts Scotland facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Visual Arts Scotland (VAS) is an art group based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It helps show the work of many different visual artists from all over the country. These artists create paintings, sculptures, textiles, ceramics, and photographs. VAS holds a big art show every year at the Royal Scottish Academy building. It is also a registered charity (No. SC006715).

The Story of Visual Arts Scotland

Starting as the Scottish Society of Women Artists

Visual Arts Scotland began in 1924. It was first called the Scottish Society of Women Artists. A man named William McDougall started it. He wanted to help his daughter, Lily McDougall, and other talented women artists. In the early 1900s, it was hard for women artists to get their work noticed. Art was mostly seen as a male field.

Growing and Changing Names

William McDougall created this group to give women artists a chance to show their skills. It also encouraged them to keep making art. This group helped women artists for many years. In the late 1980s, the group changed its name. It became the Scottish Artists and Artist Craftsmen. This was a big change because men were allowed to join for the first time.

Becoming Visual Arts Scotland

Later, between 1997 and 1999, the group changed its name again to Visual Arts Scotland (VAS). Alison Dunlop RSW was the President when this happened. Today, VAS has many different artists from all over Scotland as members. Some of the recent Presidents of VAS include Diana Hope, Robbie Bushe, Andrew Mackenzie, and Sarah Calmus.

Well-Known Artists in VAS

Many talented artists have been part of Visual Arts Scotland over the years. Some of these include:

  • Louise Gibson Annand, who was President of the Scottish Society of Women Artists twice.
  • Alison Kinnaird
  • Anne Redpath, who was President of the Scottish Society of Women Artists from 1944 to 1947.
