Founded 1985

Scouting for Food is a special yearly program run by the Boy Scouts of America. It started in 1985 in the Greater Saint Louis Area Council. The main goal of this program is to collect food for local food banks. These food banks then give the food to families who need it.

This project is a big part of what Scouting is all about. It helps Scouts live up to their Scout Slogan: "Do a good turn daily." This means doing something helpful for others every single day. In some places, you might hear this food drive called "Food for Families" or "Canning Hunger."

How Scouts Help Their Community

Each year, young people in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts help with this important event. They often start by leaving plastic bags at their neighbors' homes. These bags are for people to fill with canned food items.

About one week later, the Scouts return to pick up the bags. They then take all the collected food to a local food bank. Food banks are places where food is stored and then given to people who are struggling to buy enough to eat.

The donations usually go directly to the local food bank on the same day they are collected. This big food collection usually happens during the month of November, just before the holiday season. It's a great way for Scouts to make a real difference in their communities.
