Scientific classification

Scrinium furtivum is a type of sea snail. It's a small mollusk that lives in the ocean, belonging to a group called gastropods. This snail is part of the family known as Mitromorphidae.

What Does Scrinium furtivum Look Like?

This sea snail has a small, strong shell. It's shaped like an oval and is rounded at both ends.

Shell Size

The shell of Scrinium furtivum is about 7.5 millimeters (mm) long. That's less than half an inch! Its widest part, called the diameter, is about 3 mm.

Shell Colors and Features

The shell usually has a reddish-brown color, which is called vinaceous-buff. Sometimes, it might have a white band just below the top edge. You might also see about six thin white lines spaced evenly around the shell.

The inside opening of the shell, called the aperture, is often orange-cinnamon with a buff-colored area. The central pillar inside the shell, known as the columella, can be terra-cotta colored.

Shell Texture

Generally, the shell feels smooth. However, on the upper parts, you might find faint, bumpy ridges. The shell also has tiny, irregular lines that show how it grew over time. Sometimes, there are a few faint spiral grooves on the main part of the shell.

The outer edge of the shell's opening is simple. The inner lip has a thin layer, and the short, wide siphonal canal (a tube-like extension) is also part of the shell's design.

Where Does Scrinium furtivum Live?

This marine snail is found only in Australia. It lives off the coasts of New South Wales and Victoria. This means it is endemic to these Australian waters.
