Early Life and Training
Sebastián de Llanos y Valdís was born in Seville. He learned how to paint from a famous artist named Francisco Herrera the Elder. Llanos y Valdís mainly created paintings for private collectors and people who hired him directly.
Helping the Academy of Art
In 1660, Sebastián de Llanos y Valdís played an important role in starting the Academy of Art in Seville. He worked alongside another well-known painter, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, to create this school. Llanos y Valdís often gave oil paints and other art supplies to help the students. He was chosen to be the president of the Academy three times: in 1666 and for the next two years after that.
His Paintings
Llanos y Valdís painted several religious artworks. One of his paintings was called Virgin of the Rosary, adored by Angels and patrons. He created this for the College of San Tomas in Seville. He also painted a Magdalen for the Convent Recoletas in Madrid.
Interesting Facts
Sebastián de Llanos y Valdís is known for two interesting things. First, he was one of the few students who worked with Francisco Herrera the Elder for a long time, even though Herrera was known to be a very strict teacher. Second, Llanos y Valdís was involved in a disagreement with another artist, Alonso Cano, and was injured during the incident.
