Second Council of Seville facts for kids
The Second Council of Seville was an important meeting held in the year 619. It was a special gathering of church leaders from a region called Baetica. This meeting happened in the city of Seville. It was led by Archbishop Isidore, a very famous scholar and church leader of that time.
This council was the first of its kind in Baetica since 592. It took place soon after King Sisebut won back a large part of Baetica. This land used to be part of the Byzantine province of Spania. Because this land was returned to the Visigothic kingdom, the bishop of Málaga could attend the meeting.

What the Council Discussed
The Second Council of Seville focused only on church and religious matters. They talked about things like:
- Rights of different church areas (dioceses).
- Ordinations (making someone a priest or bishop) that didn't follow the rules.
- Unfair removals of church officials.
- Disputes over which church leader had power in certain areas.
The council set up ways to solve these problems. Many of their rules were based on old Roman law.
Dealing with Gregory
A big part of the council was about disagreeing with a person named Gregory. He was described as a bishop from Syria. He belonged to a group called the Acephali, which means "headless." In this case, it meant they disagreed with certain important church teachings. Gregory himself was at the council.
Who Else Was There?
The council did not discuss issues related to regular people in Baetica. It also didn't talk about the Visigothic government. However, two important royal officials were present:
- Sisiclus, who managed public affairs.
- Suanila, who managed money matters for the king.
Council's Legacy
The rules and decisions made at the Second Council of Seville were copied into a large collection of church records. This collection is called the Hispana. It gathered records from councils in Spain and Africa later in the seventh century. There was also a Third Council of Seville around 624, but its decisions were later removed from records.
