The Security Building is an important building in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. It was finished in 1928. This building is so special that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
The Building's Story
The Security Building was built for a company called Security Improvement Company. The head of this company was Dwight B. Heard. He was a very important real estate agent in Phoenix.
From 1897 until he passed away in 1929, Heard was one of the most powerful people in Arizona. He owned an investment company, a cattle company, and even the Arizona Republican newspaper. The Security Building was used by many different businesses over the years. It was a main office for people who grew produce and for law firms.
In 1958, a special apartment was added to the top floor. This apartment, called a penthouse, was the home of Walter R. Bimson. He was the chairman of a very successful bank called Valley National Bank of Arizona.
In 2001, Maricopa County bought the building. They started to fix it up in 2005 to make it look new again while keeping its history. Today, the Security Building holds county offices. A research group from Arizona State University used to be in the penthouse until 2012.
How the Building Was Built
The Security Building was designed by architects named Curlett & Beelman. The building was constructed by Edwards, Wildey and Dixon. The Security Building is a great example of a style called Second Renaissance Revival architecture. This style uses classic designs from the Renaissance period.
The building was made using strong materials like copper and special hand-molded bricks. It has a strong frame made of reinforced concrete. Inside, you can see beautiful marble floors and walls. The elevator doors are made of shiny brass.
