Seddon is a suburb located close to the center of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) west of Melbourne's main business area, called the Central Business District (CBD). Seddon is part of the City of Maribyrnong local government area. In 2021, about 5,143 people lived in Seddon.

Seddon is found south of Footscray and north of Yarraville. It used to be a place with many factories and working-class homes. However, because it's so close to Melbourne's city center, Seddon has changed a lot recently. It has become a more popular and modern place to live, a process called gentrification.

History of Seddon

Seddon was first known as Belgravia. It officially became a suburb in 1906. The name Seddon comes from Richard Seddon, who was the Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1893 to 1906. He lived in this area before moving to Bendigo and then to New Zealand.

Sometimes, Seddon was thought to be part of its neighbor, Footscray. For example, the old State Bank of Victoria in Charles Street, Seddon, used to stamp bank books as "Footscray South Vic." This made sense because Seddon is south of Footscray. Footscray is a busy place for shopping and transport in Melbourne's western suburbs. Seddon, however, is much quieter, with lots of trees and homes.

The main streets in Seddon, Victoria, Charles, and Gamon, once had a tram line running through the middle of the area. This tram line is no longer there. Instead, you can now find garden beds and trees planted in the middle of these streets.

Many of Seddon's street names were chosen to honor monarchs. If you look from west to east, Charles Street crosses Alfred, Edward, Henry, James, William, and Victoria Streets. Victoria Street runs next to Windsor Street, and the area ends at Albert Street.

The Seddon Post Office opened on September 29, 1908, but it closed in 1976. The Seddon West Post Office opened in 1924. It was later renamed the Seddon Post Office after it moved further south on Victoria Street. Seddon shares its postcode, 3011, with Footscray.

Community Activities in Seddon

The Seddon Community Group, with help from the Maribyrnong Council, holds the Seddon Festival every year. During the festival, the main streets in the village are closed to cars. This allows people to walk freely and enjoy the event. Several large stages are set up for bands, and local shops and cafes extend their seating onto the streets.

The Seddon Festival also hosts the Seddon Waiters Race. In this fun event, waiters from local cafes and restaurants compete. They carry drinks and food through a short course on the street. Another part of the festival is the "Snapshots of Seddon" photography competition. Photos from entrants are displayed in local business windows for a month. Judges' prizes are usually given out at the festival. There is also a "people's choice" award, where the public votes for their favorite photo.

The Seddon Makers Market is another community event. It used to be called the Maribyrnong Makers Market. This market takes place throughout the year at the Seddon Uniting Church on Gamon Street. It started in 2008 and is run by local volunteers. The market is a not-for-profit group. It gives artists and craftspeople a place to show and sell their handmade items.

Sports and Recreation

The Seddon Cricket Club plays its home games at the Yarraville Gardens.

Seddon also shares an Australian Rules football team with its neighbor, Yarraville. The team is called Yarraville-Seddon. They play in the Western Region Football League.

Across from Seddon Station, you can find the 5th Footscray Scout Group. This group offers programs for children aged 6 to 15 years old. It is part of Scouts Australia. The group meets in a historic hall that was built in the 1930s.
