The Donkey Tail plant, also known as Burro's Tail, is a cool flowering plant from southern Mexico. Its scientific name is Sedum morganianum. This plant is a type of succulent, which means it has thick, fleshy parts that store water. It's also a perennial, so it lives for more than two years.
The Donkey Tail plant grows long stems that hang down, reaching up to 60 centimeters (about 2 feet) long. Its leaves are blue-green and plump, and in summer, it can grow pretty pink or red flowers at the ends of its stems. You can find this plant growing naturally on rocky cliffs in places like Veracruz, Mexico. Because it grows in only a few specific spots, it's considered a special plant found only in those small areas.

Growing Your Donkey Tail Plant
Caring for Your Succulent Indoors
The Donkey Tail plant is a great choice for a houseplant if you live in a place with cooler weather. It likes temperatures above 5 to 7 degrees Celsius (about 41 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit). Many people grow it in hanging baskets, letting its long stems trail down like a green waterfall.
This plant has even won an award from the Royal Horticultural Society for being an excellent garden plant!
Light and Water Needs
Sedum morganianum grows well both indoors and outdoors. It needs lots of bright light to be healthy and to make its leaves look their best. However, it doesn't like extreme heat.
It's important to water your Donkey Tail plant regularly but not too much. Give it a moderate amount of water most of the year. In winter, when it's not growing as much, you should water it less often. Giving it too much water can hurt the plant very quickly.
How to Grow New Plants
It's super easy to grow new Donkey Tail plants from cuttings! You can use either a piece of stem or even just a single leaf. The leaves are quite delicate and can break off easily.
Even if a leaf breaks off, it can stay alive for many days. After a while, especially if there's some moisture in the air, tiny roots will start to grow from the leaf. These single leaves can eventually grow into new plants that are several inches long!
Waxy Leaves
You might notice a clear, waxy layer on the leaves and stems of your Donkey Tail plant. This wax helps protect the plant and keep it from losing too much water, which is important for succulents.
