Sekou Biddle's Early Life and School
Sekou Biddle grew up in a part of Washington, D.C., called Columbia Heights. He went to Woodrow Wilson High School, where he played football. After high school, he went to Morehouse College and earned a degree in business.
Sekou Biddle's Career as a Teacher
After college, Sekou Biddle became a teacher. He taught at an elementary school in the Bronx, New York City, through a program called Teach for America. Later, he taught at another elementary school in Atlanta.
In 2005, he became a math teacher at the Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP) KEY Academy in Washington, D.C. KIPP is a group of public schools that helps students succeed. After teaching, he became the director of community outreach for the Knowledge Is Power Program. This means he helped connect the schools with the local community.
Sekou Biddle's Political Journey
Sekou Biddle started his political career by running for a spot on the District of Columbia State Board of Education in 2007. This board helps make decisions about schools in Washington, D.C. Biddle talked about his own experiences growing up and working in education in the city. He won the election with 30% of the votes.
In 2008, the way the State Board of Education was set up changed. Biddle ran again, this time without anyone running against him, to represent Ward 4 on the board. He also became the leader of Jumpstart for Young Children, a group that helps prepare young kids for elementary school.
Serving on the City Council
In 2011, a spot opened up on the Council of the District of Columbia. The Council is like the city's government, making important decisions and laws. Sekou Biddle was chosen by a group of local leaders to fill this open spot. He became an "at-large" member, which means he represented the whole city, not just one area.
After being chosen, Biddle decided to run in a special election on April 26, 2011, to keep his seat on the Council. Many people supported him, including the city's mayor at the time, Vincent Gray. However, Biddle came in third place in the election. His temporary time on the Council ended on May 10, 2011.
